How Can Laser Treatment Help My Skin?

An image of a woman with clear and healthy skin.

When we hear the term “laser” we think EDM shows, Star Wars, and a fun way to mess with our cats, most of us don’t think of them as something that could help our skin. However, laser treatments have quickly become a very popular solution that many people and dermatologists are seeking out. Thanks to the versatility and quick results they provide, they’ve proven that they’re worth the hype. At Aesthetics by Docs, we specialize in laser skin treatments that are targeted to help many skin types and issues.

So let’s take a quick look at how these lasers actually work, they’re not just magic, we promise. The term “laser” is an acronym for “light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation,” meaning that it is a device that focuses light energy onto a specific area. Lasers help stimulate the growth of new cells, the production of collagen, and ultimately result in better looking and feeling skin. There are different forms of lasers that are meant to target different issues and they can all require different healing times. So, before you book a laser appointment, call to schedule a consultation or speak with your dermatologist first to see what type of laser is right for you.

So now, let’s take a look at some of the common skin issues that lasers can help treat.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

No amount of expensive creams and lotions can level up to the power of lasers. Whenever you’re looking to erase the look of fine lines and wrinkles, you may want to opt for a traditional laser treatment. These treatments heat the water in the skin to the point of evaporation, and then promote the production of new collagen. This may sound great, but you want to be aware that it may take some time before you see results. Due to the nature of this laser, your skin might be slightly red in appearance, so don’t be alarmed if you look a little tomato-ey in your first days after treatment. Your skin will also need to heal, so it may take some time before you start to see results, but don’t worry they’re there!

Broken Blood Vessels, Redness, and Spider Veins

Lasers that are targeted toward helping treat the look of broken blood vessels, facial redness, and spider veins eradicate the hemoglobin in blood cells, which then destroys the blood vessel. While some smaller blood vessels like capillaries, respond to only one treatment, issues like rosacea, larger veins, and port-wine stains (type of birthmark) may require several treatments. You also want to keep in mind that the results of these treatments are not guaranteed to be permanent. For smaller blood vessels and veins, you may experience a few hours of redness after your treatment, but for bigger areas you might experience a few days worth of redness.

Hyper-Pigmentation and Birthmarks

For these types of skin issues, fractional nonablative lasers are often used to target excessive amounts of melanin which are the cause of these spots. These treatments can make a huge difference, even with one treatment, but are once again not permanent. If you are seeking these types of laser treatments on another area of your body, be aware that they may require multiple treatments. The skin on the rest of your body can scar easily from these types of treatments and therefore cannot be treated as aggressively. If you live in a sunny area, you may also need to go in to get the affected area touched up since the area may darken due to sun exposure. You may also experience a slight scab formation after your treatment.

Acne

Lasers that are made to target acne are aimed at destroying bacteria. Many times, laser treatments are combined with other topical or oral treatments. The laser can act as an option to help target oil glands and slow oil production, commonly associated with acne prone skin. Your skin may display redness for a few hours, and may take several sessions to get the wanted results.

Scarring

Fractional ablative or non ablative resurfacing lasers are usually used for this and can offer a 50%-75% improvement. Depending on the depth of the scar, it may take multiple sessions. You may also want to speak with your dermatologist about combining multiple lasers in order to give yourself the most effective treatment.

Other Important Factors

For most of these treatments, topical numbing creams are available and may be required during the process. It is also important for you to understand that laser treatments can be expensive and may have to be paid out of pocket since most insurance companies do not cover any type of “cosmetic procedure”. However, some lasers, especially if they are related to acne can be covered by insurance as treatment of a condition since acne is considered a “condition”. So speak to your dermatologist to see what the most effective and cost effective treatments are to make sure that you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

It’s also important to note that everyone’s body may react differently. Skincare is an extremely personal issue and what might work for someone else might not work for you. The same goes to the after effects, some people might experience any redness while others might experience peeling, scabbing, and other forms of redness. But, just because your skin reacts different doesn’t mean that the treatment isn’t working. Also make sure that you aren’t scheduling any laser treatments days before any big event. Since everyone’s skin may take shorter or longer to recover, give yourself plenty of time to recover.

If you are getting a laser treatment, make sure that you haven’t engaged in any type of tanning through a bed or through the sun itself. This could cause your skin to blister or scar after the treatment. Always be sure to take extra care of your skin leading up to the day of your treatment and be honest with your treatment provider. Your skin is extremely delicate and can be damaged easily if you are not careful and honest. You’ll also want to use sunscreen or any other form of skin protection days after your treatment.
